#STORIES UNTOLD WALKTHROUGH PART 1 TV#
The first story in Stories Untold is of a man returning home, and we get to live it through the text-based adventure displayed on the TV screen.Ĭommands such as “look around” or “open” can be input in order to move the story along.

Just as you’d expect from the ‘80’s there’s a small TV on a table to the left of the screen and a ZX Spectrum on the right. Part 1: Resident EvilĪfter an opening cinematic that feels and sounds very much like Stranger Things, the game begins with an ode to text-based adventure games of yore. Each chapter does have its pros and cons, which you’ll see. If I miss things or cover too much in one section, I apologize. I’ve decided to split the review into four parts and hope that my overall narrative makes sense. Everything is presented in a brilliantly nostalgic ‘80s style that we’re all so familiar with right now thanks to a renewed love of the decade. The game is split into four chapters, each offering their own type of gameplay and story that, when added together, creates the overall narrative. I want to give you as much information as possible but don’t want to ruin the experience. So, we can only hope that their third game is much more in the vein of Stories Untold and its wonderfully scary homage to a bygone era of video games.Stories Untold is a challenging game to review for several reasons, mainly as it is a short game that is very story focused. At this point we’d normally say that we can’t wait to see what the developer does next except we already know and we hated it. But it works fine on the Switch and as inorganic as the interface is it doesn’t get in the way of the story or the puzzles.

#STORIES UNTOLD WALKTHROUGH PART 1 PC#
Now we’ve played it once we’re tempted to go back and try Stories Untold on the PC as well, just to get that extra dimension of immersion. But you can’t, not just because you want to play around with all the weird retro machinery but because you want to make something happen… you want to see how scary or bizarre it can get. More so than a standard video game, you become aware that you are the instigator in these situations and if you’d just leave alone then nothing bad would happen. Which is a shame because the game is very clever in how it uses the different situations to increase the horror and intensify the atmosphere. Microsoft may add more backwards compatible Xbox games thanks to Activision

(Again, you can imagine how that would’ve had an extra layer of meaning if you were actually using a PC to play the game.) You can usually only move between a couple of different locations at a time, with most of the game spent hunched over a computer trying to work out what’s going on. We don’t want to give away the plot of any of the stories, since the whole thing lasts only around three hours (which is reflected in the price), but each episode has a different setting and set of old-fashioned hardware to use. That sounds almost ruinous but sitting down to play the game in a darkened room, with no other distractions, we still found the whole experience extremely atmospheric and not a little scary – especially given the game’s skill with jump scares and the sheer unpredictability of everything that’s going on. Not to mention it gives away a lot of options you might not have guessed at yourself. Instead of typing you construct words by selecting them from a small grid of verbs and nouns, which works quickly and efficiently but obviously takes away a little from the atmosphere.
